17th Karmapa Ogyen Trinley Dorje

H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Ogyen Trinley Dorje, is the spiritual head of the Karma Kagyu Lineage, one of the major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. In 1985 he was born to a nomad family in Lhatok, Eastern Tibet. According to a letter of prediction of the H.H. the 16th Karmapa, in 1992 the young child Apo Gaga was recognized as the reincarnation of the previous Karmapa and returned to Tsurphu, the main seat of the Karmapas. The identification was officially confirmed by H.H. the Dalai Lama and the Chinese government. At the age of 10 H.H. Karmapa recognized the reincarnated teachers Pawo Rinpoche, Dabzang Rinpoche and Jamgon Kongtrul Rinpoche.

From 1992 on, H.H. Karmapa primarily was involved in studies of Buddhism under the direction of H.E. Situ Rinpoche, H.E. Gyaltsab Rinpoche and Drupon Dechen Rinpoche. In order to fulfill his spiritual duties, in 1999, H.H. Karmapa left Tibet and went to Dharamsala, India, where he met H.H. the Dalai Lama and received the refugee status. He now lives at Gyuto monastery near Dharamsala and receives important empowerments and transmissions from the masters of his lineage. His principal tutor now is Thrangu Rinpoche. He regularly travels to Bodhgaya and Sarnath for important Kagyu ceremonies as the Kagyu Monlam over which he presides. In 2008 H.H. Karmapa for the first time travelled to the United States and in 2010 he probably will make his first journey to Europe.
