Kagyu Teachers - 2nd Akong Rinpoche

Akong Rinpoche

Akong Rinpoche was born in 1939, in Kham, Tibet. As young child he was recognized and found as the reincarnation of the last Akong Rinpoche after precise instructions given by H.H. the 16th Karmapa. At the age of 4 he was taken to Dolma Lhakang to be trained in the Buddhist tradition and additionally in Tibetan Medicine. As a teenager he received transmissions of the Kagyu lineage from H.H. the 16th Karmapa and Shechen Kongtrul Rinpoche. Because of the takeover of Tibet in 1959, Rinpoche fled to India.
In 1963, together with Trungpa Rinpoche he went to England to learn English in Oxford.


For lifelihood, Akong Rinpoche then worked for several years as hospital orderly.
In 1967, together with Trungpa Rinpoche, Akong Rinpoche founded Samye Ling in Scotland which was visited by H.H. the 16th Karmapa in 1975 and 1977. Akong Rinpoche established a 4-year retreat at Samye Ling, he launched the construction of a Tibetan Buddhist temple in Samye Ling and the Samye Ling monastery.

Akong Rinpoche developed the therapy system Tara Rokpa, many humanitarian activities in Tibet, Nepal and Europe like soup kitchens to feed the homeless and several other projects.
Akong Rinpoche passed away in 2013.
